Solar Panel Installation
MCS-certified domestic install, 3-6kW typical. 0% VAT through March 2027. Tier 1 panels, hybrid inverter, SEG setup.
From £4,500Add a battery to your solar — store daytime generation, use it at peak-rate evenings, charge off-peak overnight. Tesla Powerwall 3, GivEnergy and Enphase systems installed by vetted Cornwall MCS specialists.
Adding a battery to a solar PV system transforms the economics. Without storage, you export your midday surplus to the grid at the Smart Export Guarantee rate (currently 4-15p/kWh depending on supplier) and buy it back at evening peak at 25-35p/kWh. With a battery, you store that surplus and use it yourself — the saving is the difference between what you'd have been paid (export rate) and what you'd have paid (import rate). That's typically a 4-5x value uplift on your generation.
The three main battery systems we install in Cornwall:
Off-peak rate arbitrage is the second leg of the battery economics. With Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus, EDF GoElectric or similar off-peak EV tariffs, you can charge the battery overnight at 7-9p/kWh and discharge it during peak hours — even without solar generation. Stack solar self-consumption + off-peak arbitrage and a battery typically pays back in 8-12 years on its own, faster as electricity prices rise.
Adding a battery to existing solar: straightforward if your inverter is hybrid-ready, more involved if you have an older string inverter (may need to swap the inverter or AC-couple a battery system). Site survey first — your installer will advise on the cleanest retrofit path.
All battery installers in our network are MCS-certified and signed up to RECC. Batteries are installed to BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 Section 712 (electrical installations — Solar PV systems) and the relevant battery-specific guidance.

Everything you need to know about solar battery storage in Cornwall.
Typical installed prices (at time of writing): 5kWh GivEnergy: £5,500-£7,500. 10kWh GivEnergy All-in-One: £7,500-£11,000. Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh): £8,500-£10,500 installed via approved installers. Enphase IQ Battery 10kWh: £8,000-£12,000. VAT is 0% on domestic batteries under the current UK zero-rate scheme.
Yes, if you size it right. A battery stored at the SEG export rate (4-15p/kWh) and discharged at peak import rate (25-35p/kWh) is worth roughly 4-5x more than just exporting. Pair with an off-peak tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus and you can also charge the battery overnight at 7-9p/kWh and arbitrage the daytime peak — even without solar. Payback: 8-12 years on the battery alone.
Tesla Powerwall 3: best app, integrated hybrid inverter, premium price. GivEnergy: best value, UK-designed, strong installer network, modular sizing. Enphase: best for AC-coupled retrofits (existing microinverter solar). All three are MCS-eligible. Your installer will recommend based on your existing inverter, target capacity and budget — there's no universal winner.
Usually yes — two routes. If your existing solar inverter is hybrid-ready, a DC-coupled battery wires straight in. If you have an older string inverter, you can AC-couple a battery system (Enphase IQ, GivEnergy AC2-coupled) or swap the inverter for a hybrid model. Site survey first; your installer will advise on the cleanest retrofit path.
Modern lithium-ion home batteries (Tesla, GivEnergy, Enphase) are warrantied for 10 years or ~10,000 cycles, with end-of-warranty capacity typically still 70-80% of original. Real-world life is often longer than the warranty — many first-gen Powerwalls from 2017-18 are still going strong. Expect to replace once over the lifetime of the solar panels (25-30 years).
Yes — lithium-ion home batteries are designed for indoor or garage installation, fitted to BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 Section 712 safety standards (Solar PV systems). Tesla Powerwall, GivEnergy and Enphase units have integrated thermal management, BMS (battery management system) protections, and meet UK electrical safety requirements. Garage or utility-room installation is typical; outdoor is also fine for most units.
Rule of thumb: match battery capacity (kWh) to roughly 1.5-2x your daily evening/overnight consumption. For a typical 3-bed UK household using ~3,000-4,000 kWh a year, that's 5-10 kWh usable. Oversizing wastes capital; undersizing leaves you buying peak-rate electricity. Your installer will model this against your actual consumption (smart-meter data helps).
