Solar panels work in Cornwall. Not as well as in Spain, but a properly-sited domestic PV system in this part of the UK reliably delivers ~950-1,050 kWh per kWp per year (Energy Saving Trust regional figure for South-West England). For a typical 4kW domestic install, that's around 3,800-4,200 kWh of generation a year — enough to cover a meaningful chunk of an average household's electricity demand, especially with a battery.
What a typical Cornwall domestic install includes:
Honest Cornwall costs (at time of writing, 2026):
Payback in Cornwall, told honestly: 8-12 years for a typical no-battery domestic install; 7-10 years with a battery if you maximise self-consumption (EV, heat pump, immersion). Anyone quoting you 4-5 year paybacks is either misleading you or assuming wildly optimistic export rates. Smart Export Guarantee export tariffs from major suppliers (Octopus, EDF, OVO) currently run roughly 4-15p/kWh depending on the deal — Octopus Flux and Outgoing tariffs tend to be at the higher end.
All installers in our network are MCS-certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and signed up to RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) — both are required for Smart Export Guarantee eligibility and consumer-protection compliance.
Getting a Cornwall MCS-certified solar panel installation specialist shouldn't be a fortnight of cold calls. Here's how it works.
Fill in the quick quote form. Tell us your Cornwall postcode, property type, the job (new install, battery, clean, repair, commercial, farm or holiday let) and rough timing.
We pair you with a vetted Cornwall MCS-certified, RECC-registered solar panel installation specialist near you. Site survey arranged direct — usually within 1-2 weeks, faster for repairs.

Everything you need to know about solar panel installation in Cornwall.
Yes — and slightly better than the UK average. South-West England gets ~950-1,050 kWh per kWp per year on a well-sited install (Energy Saving Trust regional figure). Cornwall's Penwith and Lizard peninsulas regularly hit the upper end of that range thanks to southerly latitude and open Atlantic horizons. The far west has some of the best solar irradiance in mainland UK.
Typical installed prices (at time of writing, 2026, with 0% VAT on domestic): 4kW system, no battery: £6,500-£9,500. 4kW + 5kWh battery: £9,500-£13,500. 6kW + 10kWh battery: £12,500-£17,500. Larger systems and premium panels (REC Alpha, premium inverters) cost more. Always get 2-3 quotes — prices vary widely between installers.
8-12 years for a typical no-battery domestic system, faster with a battery + EV + heat pump self-consumption. We're honest about this — anyone quoting 4-5 year paybacks is assuming wildly optimistic export rates or ignoring real-world generation. With Smart Export Guarantee tariffs at 4-15p/kWh and battery uptake, a well-sized system pays for itself, but it takes nearly a decade in this latitude.
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK quality standard for small renewable installs. Only MCS-certified installers can issue the certificates needed for Smart Export Guarantee registration with energy suppliers. Without MCS, you can't sell exported electricity back to the grid. All installers in our network are MCS-certified.
1-3 days on site for a typical 4-6kW domestic install: scaffolding day 1, panels and inverter day 2, commissioning day 3. Larger systems or those needing roof remedial work take longer. Pre-install, allow time for the DNO application (G99 systems above 3.68kW per phase need pre-approval, typically 4-8 week lead).
Usually no — domestic roof-mounted solar is normally permitted development in England. Exceptions: listed buildings (requires listed building consent), conservation areas with front-elevation visibility, AONB sites in some cases. Truro, Falmouth, Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole and St Ives have significant conservation-area coverage in town centres — check before assuming. Your installer will advise.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) launched January 2020 — energy suppliers must offer export tariffs to MCS-certified solar generators. Rates vary by supplier: Octopus Outgoing/Flux tend to be at the higher end (variable, often 8-15p/kWh peak), EDF Export Variable and OVO Smart Export at the lower end (3-5p/kWh fixed). Shop around — your supplier doesn't have to be the one that bought you the panels.
Often yes if you're home in the evenings or have an EV. A battery (Tesla Powerwall 3, GivEnergy All-in-One, Enphase IQ) lets you self-consume the solar you'd otherwise export — usually worth 3-4x the SEG rate. Adds £3,000-£5,000 to install cost; pays back over 8-12 years on its own. Pair with an off-peak EV tariff (Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus) for fastest payback.
